In December 2015, the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (“McKinney-Vento”) was reauthorized by the Every Student Succeeds Act (“ESSA”). ESSA made several changes to McKinney-Vento including new requirements for school districts that took effect on October 1, 2016. These changes are intended to ensure that homeless children and youth have access to public educational programs and services, do not face barriers to enrollment and retention, and receive the supports necessary to be successful in school.
